Nerf party safety and the right age for foam-dart battles

Eye protection is non-negotiable

Every person on the field wears goggles, including adults, including the person who is 'just going to stand at the edge and take pictures.' We bring 45 pairs, so nobody has to share or sit out.

A dart to a cheek is nothing. A dart to an unprotected eye is an emergency room visit. That is the whole reason the rule has no exceptions.

Blasters matched to age

Ages 6 to 9 get standard Nerf blasters with low dart speeds and simple manual firing.

Ages 10 to 13 move up to faster spring and flywheel blasters with bigger magazines.

Ages 14 and up, and adult groups, can play with the Rival blasters, which fire high-velocity foam rounds. We keep those out of younger games entirely rather than asking kids to remember a rule mid-battle.

A referee runs every game

The referee gives the safety briefing before the first match, explains each game mode, calls hits and stops play when someone goes down or a barricade shifts. That is a job, not a courtesy, and it is included in every package.

Rules we enforce every time: no blasters aimed at the head, no point-blank shots, no climbing barricades, goggles stay on until the referee calls the field clear.

What about mixed ages and nervous kids?

Mixed groups are normal at birthdays. We handle it by splitting teams by size and ability rather than by friendship, and by starting with target games instead of player-versus-player so shy kids warm up before anyone shoots at them.

Any kid who wants out gets a job: ammo runner, scorekeeper, target spotter. Most of them are back in the game within one round.

Heat safety in Oklahoma

Running in goggles and a vest in an Oklahoma summer is hot work. We build water breaks into the schedule, run shorter rounds when it's above 90, and push summer parties toward the 10:00am and 7:00pm slots for a reason.
